Movement and Milestones

We love to see kids at Elan Family Wellness Centre! Not only do we have Family Days once a month (usually the last Wednesday/ Thursday of the month), but we also have a monthly talk on some of the more common concerns we see with kids.  From physical stressors such as prolonged sitting, backpack and tech use (text neck!), and reduced (or repetitive) physical movement and exercise, to emotional and chemical stressors (social stress, foods, etc), our spine and neurological development are affected from an early age. Learning about our physical imbalances can allow the opportunity to make early corrections. During our workshop we will engage in exercises to test ourselves physically through balance, senses and coordination, which you can take home to check your kids! An efficient nervous system is a key part of healthy development for kids. Tuesday, February 26th at 7:00PM No charge but please RSVP at 403 217 5577. Held at #48, 7930 Bowness Rd NW

Day 56/180

I am almost a third through my 180 days and like any great adventure, I have been blown so far sideways and tipped upside down and righted back at some precarious angle.  My dad passed away on January 19th, peacefully and at their home, which came as a shock to all of us. I think the rest of that month I was in a state of shock-between driving to and from British Columbia twice, helping my mom and sister and the family house when I was "home", working when I was in town, parenting and doing all of the regular life things, and helping with details for the obituary and service. I thoroughly loved going through all of the photos and memories and hated all the reasons that I had to. The same with the service for dad-everything we wanted to see and all the family and friends that we needed there and hadn't seen in ages, but of course, under the worst of circumstances. That weekend-not only saying goodbye, but a weekend of the most extreme weather possible-my husband and brot

Scott’s Top Ten Ways to Stay Warm in February

Thank you to Scott Hutchison, Registered Massage Therapist with Elan Family Wellness Centre in Bowness/ NW Calgary, for these suggestions on staying WARM this  February (hint: Our theme this month is WARMTH).  Yoga in a skidoo suit. Drink water. Hot or room temperature. Often we forget to drink water during the colder months and due to the extremely dry climate... you should just go drink some water and come back and read the rest. Wear wool. If that is not possible... dress in layers and don’t forget a hat. Wear the hat you almost forgot about. Dance. Just put on some music and celebrate the cold by getting warm dancing. Buy flowers for a loved one... see where it goes ;) Try powering your body with fat instead of sugar. Yes, yes... fad diets aside... up your calories a touch with good fats instead of immune suppressing white refined sugar. Go back and do #4. Get a massage... that will warm up your muscles without having to do anything. Refer to number eight. Have a Warm F

FIKA in February

Image
We hope you can join us for FIKA in February! As part of our February Warmth Theme, we thought celebrating FIKA-the art of taking the time for a break, would be a good way to bring more warmth to your day! Once a week we will be brewing the coffee, so please join us after your Chiropractic, Massage, Acupuncture or Psychology appointment!  In honour of February, a month where we all can use more Warmth, join us for a morning or afternoon of  What is Fika? Swedes consider Fika as an essential part of the day. It is about setting aside time in the day to enjoy a cup of coffee (or tea) as well as snacks with family, friends and colleagues. We look forward to spending time and getting to know each and every one of you!
