Scott's Thoughts on Nutrition (via David Wolfe)

From our May newsletter, Scott's Thoughts on Nutrition (primarily influenced by David Wolfe).   My wife calls it a man-crush, and that may be very true, but the fact that David Wolfe (nutritional guru, face of the Nutribullet and all around super nice guy) was in town last week compelled me to take action regrading my immediate health and knowledge base. What kind of action you ask? Well, I had been stuck in my comfort zone of just following him from behind the computer screen, occasionally getting to hear him speak at events around Calgary. So, last weekend at The Seed Event, I made my move to say hello. And I did. It was nice. Josephene describes the encounter as me gushing like a 1950's teenage girl at an Elvis concert. The following day I was procrastinating on the sofa as to whether or not to attend a talk David was giving at The Light Cellar that night. Mulling it over as I normally do , making excuses as to not take a step. Then suddenly

SEEDS of change

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Guy Kawasaki, David Wolfe, Theoren Fleury and more! What a treat to have them in one place in one day; an even bigger treat to be a part of that day. The SEED event brought together many inspirational speakers- from the subjects of nutrition to personal development to spiritual enlightenment. The day included a marketplace that supported personal and community growth and included us-our very own Elan Family Wellness Centre! We were honored to be part of this day and help to educate participants on Reorganizational Healing and how our forms of care can help our health and wellness. Dr Adrienne at the Elan Family Wellness booth at the SEED Marketplace Sandra and Scott hard at work-Reflexology & Muscle Testing As part of the day, I did manage to hear some of the speakers-I was able to hear both Guy Kawasaki and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar speak. Following are some of the seeds of change that found themselves in my brain... Guy Kawasaki spoke on the

Clay and The 12 Senses

Image
This past weekend was the 4th Annual Waldorf Gateways Conference, with keynote speaker, Dr. Adam Blanning.  Dr Blanning is trained in family practice medicine and in anthroposophically extended medicine.  I enjoyed learning about Health and Well-Being for Children and Families, and especially enjoyed my two workshops.   The clay...wonderful for our 12 senses!  Hopefully that's making you think a little, are you familiar with our 12 senses?  The first 5 are easy... vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch.  And then?   Imagine working with clay-first you will see the clay, and then reach out and touch it.  You may bring it up to your nose to smell, but hopefully you don't stick your tongue out to taste it.  The clay may feel cold, or start to warm up as you work it in your hands.  You probably won't hear too much from the clay, except the quiet of the room, or other voices.  If you hear voices, you may hear words being spoken; you may have thoughts about those words

Pregnancy Tips

It's Mother Earth Month at Elan Family Wellness Centre.  Here's a guest post from our Reflexologist Sandra to help you through pregnancy!   Top 10 pregnancy tips 1. Get comfy clothes (think pants with the big band on top, yes those). Invest in some supportive bras in larger sizes, some sports bras work well too. 2. Get a support team together (doula, post partum doula if you need extra help other than family & friends). 3. Get educated on what kind of birth you would like (water birth, birthing centre, midwives). Read both Ina May books. 4. Think about nutrition and source some places for healthy foods. Plan some easy meal prep and high protein snacks and have them on hand, you WILL get hungry fast! 5. Use your benefits, check out acupuncture, chiro, massage etc. and treat your growing body to some relaxation and re-aligning. 6. Move! Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga... It'll do you and baby good. 7. Be gentle with yourself. This us a time

Keeping Healthy on Holidays

Image
We are in Prague for a holiday.  Prague is known for many things-Charles Bridge, Prague Castle,  historic churches and buildings on every block, its Communist past, its Jewish history, its eclectic nightlife, marionettes and Easter Eggs.  And hearty meals, including various forms of pork with potato dumplings, sauerkraut, and beer.  While beer is not my weakness, this is:  Hot Chocolate at the Choco Cafe We coincidentally just happen to be across the street from a Choco Cafe.  We've been there three times, so far.  Cherry and Almond hot chocolate, chocolate with sea salt, chocolate with brandy, banana hot chocolate, chocolate and cafe and plain old hot chocolate with milk and whipped cream. Needless to say, its possible my health may suffer.   Fortunately to combat this, the city comes built in with the solution: Stairs and lots of hills.   For instance, to see this: View of Prague from Prague Castle viewpoint You need to climb this:
