Mother Nature's Wisdom

Thank you to Dr Robert Clarke, Chiropractor with Elan Family Wellness Centre in Bowness, NW Calgary, for this article related to our Mother Earth month.

With Spring here, its great to feel the warmth of the sun and see the budding of new life everywhere. It helps us soften the memory of one of the coldest February's in recent history. Yet Mother nature is wise always balancing elements. We had a milder than usual January, this woke up the Pine beetles and Ticks, so they began to wake from their winter hiding to then be faced with The February Freeze. This helps to control the destruction of our pine forests, and decreasing the tick populations, both good things that we humans could not adequately manage. So take the time to observe the flow of nature from a grander perspective and marvel in the wisdom of Mother Earth.

In the same way, monitor your body and your health. Often our body responds in ways that don’t make sense to us. Being sick isn’t always a sign of poor health. In fact a fever is often the perfect response to a virus or bacteria that is in your system. Sometimes it is better to support your body through it's natural healing process rather than suppressing the symptoms. Be a good observer, notice what precipitated the illness or pain you are experiencing. How have you been eating, have you been getting enough rest, how stressed have you been, all these contribute to how our body regulates and modifies given the environment you have created. Look at the mental, physical and chemical stressors in your life. Just like mother earth your body is doing its best to manage your internal environment. Scan your body regularly, notice where and how you're holding tension, take an inventory of what you have been putting into your body. Are you eating enough fruits and veggies, drinking enough water, have you been consuming alcohol, unhealthy foods or smoking? How stressed have you been? Are you pushing your body too hard? Maybe your body is asking you to change some things in your life.

Life is a cycle, where it be mother natures or your own be a good observer. If you are planning a hiking trip and storm clouds are brewing, you will either prepare differently or reschedule. Same goes for your body, observe changes in tension in your body, in your digestive track or your energy level then adjust accordingly.  Shift how you are eating, rest, increase your water intake, stretch. Adjust how you feed and use your body according to how it is responding. You wouldn’t try climbing a mountain in a storm, don’t push your body beyond what it is you have prepared it for. Take care for your health so that your body doesn’t have to get sick or injured to inspire change.
